from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Ludwig Wilhelm Leopold Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (born October 25, 1829 in Langenburg , † May 16, 1907 in Salzburg ) was the 5th Prince of the House of Hohenlohe-Langenburg .

Youth and education

Karl was born as the eldest son of Prince Ernst I zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg and his wife Princess Feodora zu Leiningen . After stays in Dresden and Gotha for educational purposes, he studied law for three semesters at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin (1850–51). He then spent a few years at the headquarters in preparation for his future role as a civil servant . It was not until the mid-1850s that he embarked on a military career in the Austrian and later in the Württemberg army, although he was appointed a Württemberg officer as early as 1848. Since 1855 he was a knight of honor in the Order of St. John .

family

In 1861 Prince Karl married the butcher's daughter Marie Grathwohl in Paris and led a secluded life with her and the children, initially in Weikersheim , and from 1877 in Salzburg. The following children emerged from the marriage: Carl, Viktoria and Beatrix.

Because of his improper marriage intentions, Prince Karl had to renounce class rule in favor of his brother Hermann after the death of his father in 1860 , but he retained the title of prince. In order to enable his family to earn a livelihood that at least came close to his own class, he achieved his wife's elevation to the Württemberg nobility as Frau von Bronn in 1862 . This title also applied to her descendants, as did the appointment of Baroness von Bronn by the King of Württemberg in 1890 .

His son Carl achieved a further rise in status in 1911 when he and his first-born male descendants were admitted to the Austrian princely class when the princes of Weikersheim and his other descendants were given the right to use the title of Counts and Countesses of Weikersheim in the future. With his grandson Franz, the house of Weikersheim went out in 1983 in the male line .

Demise

Prince Karl zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg died in Salzburg in 1907 and was buried in the Salzburg municipal cemetery.
