Karmeliterplatz (Mainz)

The Karmeliterplatz is a square in the old town of Mainz . It takes its name from the Carmelite Church in the immediate vicinity .

Location and surroundings

The Karmeliterplatz is located in the northern old town of Mainz, a few minutes' walk from the Rheingoldhalle and the banks of the Rhine.

Carmelite Church

East of the square is the eponymous, listed Carmelite Church, which was built in the 14th century and has been used again by the Carmelites since 1924. South of the Karmeliterplatz are the ruins of the St. Christoph church , where Johannes Gutenberg was baptized.

Cultural monuments

The following cultural monuments are located on Karmeliterplatz:

  • Residential house (built 1950/1951), originally planned for the Carmelite monastery
  • Statue of the Madonna (built at the beginning of the 18th century, at house Karmeliterplatz 4)

Transport links and regular events

As part of the series of events Mainz lives on its squares , an event with live music takes place on Karmeliterplatz every Tuesday and Thursday in July and August.

The Schusterstraße / Galeria Kaufhof and Rheingoldhalle / Rathaus bus stops are just a few minutes' walk from the square , from which both the main train station and almost all of Mainz's districts can be reached by direct connection.
