The Carmelites of the Divine Heart of Jesus ( abbreviation DCJ ) are a Catholic religious order founded by the Blessed Maria Tauscher and affiliated to the Carmelite Order .

The community unites the contemplative life of the Carmelites with the apostolate, which is why it venerates Saint Francis Xavier as its patron alongside the Saints of Carmel . The General Motherhouse is located in Sittard in the Netherlands , there is a German province with its seat on Pappelallee in Berlin.

history

Anna Maria Tauscher van den Bosch was born in Sandow (Mark Brandenburg) in 1855 into a Lutheran pastor family and converted in 1888.

In 1891 she founded the first St. Josefs Home for homeless children in Berlin . Since 1893 she has been joined by co-workers who, like themselves, felt called to religious life. Maria Tauscher devoted herself to restless travel and founding activities in the following years, but initially she did not find recognition from the Curia for the order she wanted with a Carmelite stamp because of the way of life . Their community only had association statutes under the name "Servants of the Divine Heart of Jesus". In 1904 a novitiate and mother house was founded in Rocca di Papa near Rome . The rule was not recognized until 1910 and finally approved in 1930.

In 1897 there were already seven other St. Josefs homes in Berlin, Graupen (Bohemia), Marschen (Bohemia) and Vechta . Maria Tauscher founded other homes in Germany, England, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Austria and North America. She was not picky about the choice of buildings, but because of the urgency of the need, from an old Dominican monastery ( St. Katharinen (Halberstadt) ) to a barrack (in Gdansk ) took every opportunity to fetch orphans from the street and put them on supervise. Back then, surplus children were even offered for sale in newspaper advertisements. A rest home for the Berlin children and sisters was also built in Birkenwerder near Berlin. Homes for the elderly were also founded later, as the situation of the elderly in the industrial cities was as bad as that of the children. Kindergartens and after-school care centers were often attached to the children's homes .

In 1924 the General Motherhouse was able to be built in Sittard . Today the Carmelites of the Divine Heart of Jesus are active in 15 countries in Europe, America and Africa. Today the order has around 5000 members worldwide. Mother Maria-Teresa died in 1938. On May 13, 2006, she was beatified in Roermond .
