Karsten Schwanke (born February 5, 1969 in Ziesar , Brandenburg-Land district , GDR ) is a German meteorologist and television presenter .

Life

Karsten Schwanke grew up in Ziesar and attended school there until he graduated from high school. From 1987 to 1988 he then trained as a technical assistant for meteorology at the Meteorological Service of the GDR in Potsdam . He then began basic studies in meteorology at the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1988 , which he continued from 1991 to 1995 with the main studies at the University of Hamburg . He wrote his diploma thesis entitled “Simulation of volcanic eruptions” with the help of the world's first 3D volcano model at the German Climate Computing Center in Hamburg.

Schwanke lives in Cologne , is married and has two children.

Professional

From 1995 Schwanke worked for Jörg Kachelmann's Meteomedia AG and presented Das Wetter in Erste and from 1996 Das Wetter in ARD morning magazine . 1996–2001 he presented the animal program for children Chameleon as the first non-weather-related broadcast, and 1999–2003 also the ARD science program Kopfball and other science programs. In 2006 he switched to ZDF , where he presented the knowledge magazine Adventure Knowledge until May 4, 2011 , which was broadcast for the last time on that day. In January 2010, the show received the Golden Camera for “Best Information Knowledge Magazine”.

Since autumn 2011 he can be seen again as a meteorologist in the ARD, among other things in the weather before eight , in the ARD-Tagesthemen as well as in various third programs. In 2012 he founded the production company WQ Media GmbH together with Peter Prestel . With this company he produces the science talk show "SMS - Schwanke meets Science" moderated by him on ARD-alpha as well as reports for Arte .

In November 2018, Karsten Schwanke explained the connection between the long, dry summer and climate change in the weather before eight. The explanatory video became one of the most watched internet videos in November 2018. For this declaration he was nominated for the Grimme Prize 2019 . In September 2019 it was awarded the "TV Weather Forecast Award" for the best weather forecast in Europe.
