The Karswald is a forest area with meadows and swampy areas east of the Saxon state capital Dresden between Arnsdorf , Fischbach and Rossendorf . Together with Harthe to the southwest, it occupies a total of around 547 hectares. Around one hundred hectares of this area are in the area of the Rossendorf Research Center .

geography

The Karswald extends over about 260  m above sea level. NN- situated terrain, which has almost flat shapes with only very slightly inclined crests and ridges. Slight incisions in the Schwarzen Röder and its tributaries formed valleys up to two meters deep. Excess surface water, especially when it rains heavily, is collected in a spacious ditch system. In several places you come across dams of former ponds up to two meters high, the floors of which are criss-crossed with drainage lines.

Origin of name

The name Karswald can be traced back to the noble family Karras , which is mentioned as early as the 13th century.

use

Numerous hiking trails criss-cross the Karswald, which is supervised by the forest ranger in Fischbach. The sources of the Radeberger export beer brewery are located in the Karswald .

About one kilometer southwest of the Reinhardswalde desert are the remains of a dynamite factory built around 1880 . It was located on an area about three hundred by two hundred meters and was surrounded by a moat. The factory opposite the later Central Institute for Nuclear Physics was probably demolished after the First World War . Today the forest recaptured the area. Next to the administration building at the end of the access road, only ruins can be seen.

Nearby, a stone reminds of a Schullwitz worker who was found murdered at the Schänkhübel in 1883 .
