A potato festival in Austria and Potato Festival called ( English potato festival ; plattdt. , Tuffelfest '), is a regularly recurring event after the potato harvest, in addition to the sociability of potato consumption stands in the foreground. In addition to side dishes, visitors are offered dishes based on potatoes. These are, for example, potato salad , baked potatoes , French fries and potato pancakes . At larger festivals there is also a musical program, rides and stalls that offer other agricultural products.

On the customs of the potato festival in Schnepfenthal , Thuringia , the educational papers or magazine for youth published in Leipzig wrote in 1807:

“One of the rural Schnepfenthäler festivals, which are celebrated throughout the year in God's free, beautiful nature, is also the potato festival. It is celebrated in the following way: When the potatoes have reached the necessary ripeness and a very bright day arrives, Father Salzmann announces that the Potato Festival should now be held. "

- Döring

Christian Gotthilf Salzmann celebrated the first Schnepfenthal Potato Festival on October 9, 1789.

The Machern Potato Festival is based on documentary evidence that the pastor Christoph Gottfried Ungibauer (1701–1758), who first cultivated potatoes in Naunhof in 1734, cultivated them in 1740 on the then manor Machern on 4.5 hectares. A potato festival has been celebrated in Naunhof since 1990.

In Leipzig there was a potato festival until around 1830, at which there were 80 dishes, exclusively made from potatoes, potato bread "and drinks that were all made from defused potato brandy".

Modern potato festivals take place almost exclusively in rural areas. In Germany there are among others in Maihingen , Wülfrath , Wehnsen Kakerbeck , Herbern , Netzen , Nellingen , Brietlingen , Memmendorf , Taucha and Großwaltersdorf . In Austria, for example, there are potato festivals in Ludmannsdorf , St. Paul im Gailtal (Carnic Potato Festival ) and Treßdorf , in Belgium in Neidingen and in Switzerland for example in Benken ZH and Domat / Ems .

Outside of German-speaking countries, for example , the Sagra della Patate ( Potato Festival) is celebrated in Grotte di Castro ( Italy ) every August and the Nicholas County Potato Festival in Summersville (West Virginia) .
