Katharina Reiss

Katharina Reiss (born April 17, 1923 in Rheinhausen ; † April 16, 2018 in Munich ) was a German translator and translation scholar who pioneered the field of translation studies with her work on text types and translation methods.

Life

Katharina Reiss taught at the Interpreting Institute at Heidelberg University from 1944 to 1970 . In 1954 she received her doctorate with a thesis on the Spanish writer and journalist Clarín . From 1965 she took on the role of academic adviser and head of the Spanish department of the interpreting institute. In 1970 she moved to the University of Würzburg as Academic Senior Councilor and later as Academic Director , where she continued to teach after her retirement in 1988. She completed her habilitation on the subject of "operative text type" at the University of Mainz , for which she was awarded the Venia legendi for applied linguistics in 1974 and the associated title of professor. A year later, she took on a teaching position at the International and Interpreting Institute of the University of Mainz in Germersheim . As a visiting professor, she gave a series of lectures in the 1994/1995 winter semester at the Institute for Translator and Interpreter Training at the University of Vienna . Katharina Reiss was a co-founder of the Eugen Biser Foundation in Munich and was a member of its board of trustees from 2002 to 2018.

Services

With almost ninety publications and guest lectures in more than twenty countries, Katharina Reiss is an important representative of modern translation studies. It is often wrongly as a co-founder of skopos theory called because in the first part of the book together were responsible for a foundation of a theory of translation from 1984 Hans Vermeer presented his first skopos theory grounded while tearing their integrated texttypologisches concept in the context of this theory in the second part. To standardize terminology in translation studies, she suggests text type and translation method in her habilitation thesis . The operative text. a classification of the texts into four text types. Based on the Organon model of Karl Buhler texts are distinguished according to their respective functions. This results in the classification into informative, expressive or operative texts. As a fourth text type, Reiß suggests the audio-media text type. This includes all texts that use other means of communication in addition to language, for example technical, acoustic or graphic means.
