Mazara del Vallo Cathedral
The Cathedral of San Salvatore in Mazara del Vallo is the cathedral of the diocese of Mazara del Vallo , a diocese in the ecclesiastical province of Palermo in the ecclesiastical region of Sicily of the Roman Catholic Church .
Built between 1086 and 1093, the church underwent major renovations between 1690 and 1694. The apse and part of the walls of the transept are still Norman . The campanile dates from 1654 to 1658, the facade was renewed from 1904 to 1906, but has retained a high relief on which Count Roger I attacked an unbeliever.
In the vestibule there is a commemorative plaque for Bishop Tustinus of Mazara († 1180), which dates from this time, as well as a Roman sarcophagus from the 3rd century AD. In the corridor between the Chapel of the Madonna del Soccorso and the Chapel of the Sacraments, there is a medieval fresco depicting a Pantocrator .
