Katherine "Kate" Bates (born May 18, 1982 in Sydney ) is a former Australian cyclist who was successful on the road and track .

Athletic career

Katherine Bates began cycling at the age of ten. Six years later she was nominated for the Junior Track World Championships and immediately took second place in the single pursuit .

Since then, Katherine Bates has taken numerous podiums at track world championships, track world cups and road races. In 2002, she took first place in the points race and second in the pursuit at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester . She was Australian champion six times, five times on the track and once on the road. Twice she took part in the Olympic Games, in 2004 in Athens (4th place in the pursuit) and in 2008 in Beijing.

At the 2007 World Track Cycling Championships in Palma , Bates was world champion in points. At the UCI Track World Championships 2011 in Apeldoorn , the Netherlands , she won silver in the scratch . At the end of this year, she announced her resignation because of chronic back pain.

Katherine Bates' hometown club is the Parramatta Cycling Club , which was founded by her grandfather and in which her sister Natalie was also active.

Honors

In 2019, Katherine Bates was inducted into the Cycling Australia Hall of Fame .
