Katherine Marie Helmond (born July 5, 1929 in Galveston , Texas - † February 23, 2019 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress .

Life

Katherine Helmond was the daughter of Thelma Malone and was of Irish descent. She graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville , South Carolina . Helmond was in 1973 for her supporting role in the play The Great God Brown (The Great God Brown) by Eugene O'Neill for a Tony Award nomination. From 1977 to 1981 she played the lead role as Jessica Tate in the television series Soap , for which she received a Golden Globe Award in 1981. She was also nominated for an Emmy Award for the series in 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981 .

From 1984 to 1992, Helmond starred in the television series Who's the Boss? the role of Mona Robinson, mother of Angela Bower (played by Judith Light ). For this role she was nominated in 1988 and 1989 for an Emmy Award for "Best Supporting Actress". In 1986 and 1989 she was nominated for the role for a Golden Globe Award, which she won in 1989. In the comedy film Overboard - A goldfish falls into the water , she appeared in a major role alongside Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell in 1987 . She was nominated for a Saturn Award for her role in the 1988 film The Fantastic Journey into the Beyond . She played one of the leading roles in the television film Don't Lie to Me in 1991. She received her seventh Emmy nomination in 2002 for her role in Everybody Loves Raymond .

Helmond married for the first time in 1957. After her divorce from her first husband, Helmond married a second time in 1962. She lived with the second partner until her death.
