Kathleen M. Coleman

Kathleen M. Coleman (* 1953 in Salisbury , Southern Rhodesia ) is an American classical philologist .

Life

Kathleen M. Coleman grew up in Southern Rhodesia and Rhodesia , today's Zimbabwe . She studied at the University of Cape Town ( BA 1973) and the University of Rhodesia (BA 1975). Then she studied as a member of Lady Margaret Hall at the University of Oxford , where she received her PhD in 1979. She then taught until 1993 as a lecturer at the University of Cape Town. From 1993 to 1998 she was Professor of Latin at Trinity College Dublin . Since 1998 she has taught as James Loeb Professor of the Classics at Harvard University . She has been an honorary member of theSociety for the Promotion of Roman Studies and since 2012 corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 2013/14 Coleman was a scholarship holder at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . In 2020 she was elected as an external member of the British Academy .

Her research areas include Latin literature, the poetry of the Flavian period, history and culture of the early imperial era, Roman circus games and the reception of antiquity in South Africa , especially in the work of the poet Douglas Livingstone .

For the period film Gladiator , Coleman worked as a historical advisor during the shooting. Despite the producers' claim to have depicted ancient Rome as accurately as possible, Coleman was so dissatisfied with the outcome that she had her name removed from the credits. She commented on her participation with the words: “Historical authenticity seems to be a somewhat peripheral consideration.” She later summarized her experiences in the essay The Pedant Goes to Hollywood: The Role of the Academic Consultant .
