Kathy Burke

Katherine Lucy Bridget "Kathy" Burke (born June 13, 1964 in London ) is a British actress .

Life

Kathy Burke was almost a year old when her mother died of cancer. She has two older brothers. Because her father, of Irish descent, suffered from alcohol problems and was prone to violence, Burke lived temporarily in an orphanage. She attended free acting classes at the Anna Scher School in Islington , now known as the non-profit Young Actors Theater , when she was 16 . By her own account, Burke herself suffered from alcohol problems until she was 26.

Burke made his debut in 1981 on the television series Educating Marmalade . In the film drama Scrubbers (1983) she played one of the bigger roles. Her role in the 1993 miniseries Mr. Wroe's Virgins earned Burke a Royal Television Society Award in 1994 . For her appearances in three episodes of the television series Harry Enfield and Chums in 1994, she was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award in 1998 . In 1998 she received the second nomination for the same award for her role in the miniseries The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1997) and the third for her starring role in Nil by Mouth (1997) directed by Gary Oldman . In the drama about a family from the British working class, she was a pregnant and abused wife of Ray Winstone to see and won the 1997 Best Actor Award of the International Film Festival of Cannes and the 1998 British Independent Film Award .

In the film drama Tanz in die Freiheit (1998), Burke was seen at the side of Meryl Streep as her film sister. For this role she was nominated for the 1999 Golden Satellite Award . In the historical drama Elizabeth (1998) with Cate Blanchett in the lead role, she played the terminally ill Mary Tudor .

From 1999 to 2001 Burke appeared in the television series Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award in 2001 and 2002. In 1999 and 2000 she was nominated for the British Comedy Award , which she received in 2002. In 2002 she received the British National Television Award for this role . The title role of Perry in the musical comedy Kevin and Perry Do It (2000) earned her a 2001 Empire Award nomination .

Burke wrote the play Mr Thomas , which was staged under her direction with Ray Winstone in the lead role at the Old Red Lion theater. She lives in London.
