Katri Raik (born October 26, 1967 in Tartu , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian scientist and politician. Since November 26, 2018, she has been Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Estonia. Raik belongs to the Estonian Social Democratic Party (SDE).

Life

After graduating from high school in her hometown, Katri Raik studied at the University of Tartu . From 1991 to 1999 she worked there as an assistant to the rector. From 1999 to 2007 she was the director of the University of Narva (Narva Kolledž) . During this time she received her PhD in history in 2004.

From 2007 to 2009 she worked in the Estonian Ministry of Education and Science and then returned to the post of director of Narva Kolledž . From 2015 to 2018 she was the rector of the Estonian Security Academy (Eesti Sisekaitseakadeemia) .

In November 2018, Katri Raik, succeeding Andres Anvelt , who had resigned for health reasons , became Estonian Minister of the Interior in the Ratas I cabinet . In the 2019 parliamentary election , she ran as a candidate for the SDE in the Ida-Viru constituency. There she managed to win a parliamentary seat in the Riigikogu with 2,112 votes . Since her party did not become part of the government again, she has been an opposition member of parliament ever since.
