Kazimierz Michał Ujazdowski (born July 28, 1964 in Kielce ) is a Polish politician and doctor of law and was a member of the Sejm in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th electoral terms . From 2014 to 2019 he was a member of the European Parliament .

education

Ujazdowski is a graduate of the Faculty of Law and a lecturer on leave from the University of Łódź . In October 2004 he defended his doctoral thesis on the political thoughts of Adolf Bocheński .

Political activity

In the 1980s he joined the democratic opposition. In 1982 he was arrested and sentenced by a military court to a suspended prison sentence for oppositional activity (distribution of pamphlets against the state of war ). During his studies in Łódź he took part in actions of the Ruch Młodej Polski (German Young Poland Movement). He was the editor of the Samizdat magazine Prześwit .

From 1991 to 1993 Ujazdowski was a member of the Unia Demokratyczna and the Partia Konserwatywna , from 1997 to 2001 a member of the AWS and between 2001 and 2007 for the Prawo i Sprawiedliwość . In the parliamentary elections in 2007 he received a mandate in the constituency of Wroclaw .

From March 16, 2000 to July 12, 2001 he was Minister of Culture in the Buzek cabinet . He resigned from his position to protest against Lech Kaczyński's dismissal as Minister of Justice. From July 2, 2004 until the end of the fourth electoral term, he was Vice- Marshal of the Sejm .

As Minister of Culture, he supported initiatives that were intended to underline and propagate Poland's historical merits. After being reappointed Minister of Culture in 2005, he successfully led an international campaign to change the name of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp on the UNESCO World Heritage List . He was the initiator of the Museum of the History of Poland (pl. Muzeum Historii Polski ). On March 11, 2007 he founded the cultural institution Center for “Remembrance and Future” in Wroclaw . Its purpose is to promote Polish culture and post-war history.

He was a co-founder of the Forum Prawicy Demokratycznej (German Forum of the Democratic Right), which was merged in 1991 in the Unia Demokratyczna . As one of the few members of the Unia Demokratyczna, he voted for the lustration of public figures and against the appointment of Waldemar Pawlak as prime minister. After leaving, he co-founded the Partia Konserwatywna . Within the party, he spoke out against rapprochement with the UD and the Kongres Liberalno-Demokratieyczny (Liberal-Democratic Congress - KLD). This faction was transformed into the Koalicja Konserwatywna (Conservative Coalition - KD) after the breakup .

Ujazdowski was party chairman until the union with the Stronnictwo Konserwatywno-Ludowe (Conservative People's Party - SKL) in 1999 and remained in the SKL until 2001. Together with party members of the SKL and the Zjednoczenie Chrześcijańsko-Narodowe (Christian National Association - ZChN) he founded the Przymierze Prawicy (Association of the Right) in 2001, of which he was party chairman from 2001 to 2002. After joining Prawo i Sprawiedliwość , Ujazdowski held the post of co-chairman of the PiS from 2002 to 2007. He was a co-author of the party program in the areas of culture, history politics and foreign policy.

On November 5, 2007, he resigned from his party function together with Paweł Zalewski and Ludwik Dorn to protest against the leadership style of chairman Jarosław Kaczyński . Membership was suspended on November 15, 2007. In December 2007 he resigned from the party.

On January 26th, 2008 Ujazdowski founded the regional association "Lower Silesia XXI", which was close to the nationwide initiative Ruch Obywatelski "Polska XXI" .

In September 2010 he became a member of the PiS party again and was elected from the party list to the European Parliament on the occasion of the 2014 European elections . Since January 2017 he has been independent again.

He approached the citizens' platform and was presented by Grzegorz Schetyna as a candidate for the office of mayor of Wroclaw on the occasion of the upcoming local government elections on April 3, 2018 , but was later withdrawn. On April 13, 2018, he left the EKR parliamentary group of the PiS.

Publications

He is the author of press articles and books dealing with cultural and historical politics as well as constitutional problems and the history of Polish conservatism .

In 2001 he compiled Stefan Kisielewski's pre-war publications . He published in Rzeczpospolita , Gazeta Wyborcza , or Wprost , among others . From 1990 to 1991 he was editor of Polityka Polska and is the founder and editor of Kwartalnik Konserwatywny .

Private

His grandfather Kazimierz Cyprian Ujazdowski was a well-known lawyer during the interwar period . He is the son of former MP Kazimierz Mieczysław Ujazdowski .

He has three children with his wife Lidia (former member of the Sejmik of the Masovian Voivodeship ).

Ujazdowski is also an honorary member of the Polish Scout Association (pl. Związek Harcerstwa Rzeczypospolitej ).
