Kenneth Ronald Berry (born November 3, 1933 in Moline , Illinois - † December 1, 2018 in Burbank , California ) was an American actor and dancer . From 1960 to 1999 inclusive he was seen in 60 film and television productions.

Life

The son of an accountant took tap dancing lessons as a teenager and later became a singer and dancer. After high school, however, he did his military service first in the United States Army , where he also won a dance competition and was allowed to appear on a television show by Arlene Francis . His friend and army comrade Leonard Nimoy , who was already active as an actor, encouraged Berry to pursue a full-time show career in Hollywood and gave him top addresses. Although he received a contract with Universal Studios , there were no suitable roles for him, which is why he left the film business again in the following years in shows in Las Vegas and Los Angeles with artists such as Abbott and Costello , Ken Murray and Billy Barnes .

From the early 1960s, he received his first television roles, for example in the role of the comical doctor Dr. Kapish in the television series Dr. Kildare alongside Richard Chamberlain . He became known in the US mid-1960s for his starring role as Captain Parmenter in the Western - sitcom F Troop . In 1968 he starred as the widowed farmer Sam Jones on the Andy Griffith Show . Because this character was so popular, it received its own spin-off from 1968 to 1971 with the television series Mayberry RFD . In Germany, he was most likely to become famous through roles in Disney films , such as the lawyer Mr. Willoughby in Herbie big in Fahrt (1974) and the physicist Dr. Frank Wilson taking care of an alien cat in The Cat from Outer Space (1978). He had his last leading television role between 1983 and 1990 in the sitcom Mama's Family , opposite Vicki Lawrence , where he played the role of the childish and accident-prone Vinton Harper .

From the 1990s onwards, Berry gradually withdrew into retirement. Ken Berry was married to actress Jackie Joseph from 1960 to 1977 , with whom he adopted two children. He died on December 1, 2018 at the age of 85.
