Kendija Aparjode (* 24. December 1996 in Sigulda ) is a Latvian luger .

Kendija Aparjode is the daughter of Aiva Aparjode, a former Latvian Olympic luger . Her younger brother Kristers Aparjods is also a world class sledder . She was trained first by her mother, now by Kaspars Dumpis . She attended the Murjāņu sporta ģimnāzija .

Junior area

Aparjode played her first international race at the end of January 2013 at a Nations Cup in her home town of Sigulda, where she finished 23rd and thus missed qualifying for the main race in the World Cup by two places. Nevertheless she won eleven points for the overall World Cup and finished it 51st. Then she made her debut in the A-Youth World Cup and was eighth in Oberhof , fifth in Igls and eighth again in Winterberg . With 139 points she was 12th overall in only half of the possible races. In the following season , she took part in all races in the series and, apart from a twelfth place on the Königssee artificial ice rink, was always in single-digit places. In Sigulda she reached the podium for the first time and only had to admit defeat to Olessja Michailenko . In the final overall ranking, Aparjode finished sixth with 273 points. She also took part in her first Junior World Championships in 2014 in Igls and was 23.

For the 2014/15 season Aparjode started the season in Igls in the World Cup and was 14th in the Nations Cup, which means she qualified for the first time for the main race, which she finished 19th. It was the last mission for this season. In both the overall standings of the Nations Cup and the World Cup, she finished the season with 28 and 22 points, 41 respectively. She finished the 2015 Junior World Championships in Lillehammer in 13th place. She then returned to the Junior World Cup and was ninth in Oberhof. It was also the 2015 European Junior Championships , in which she came eighth. In the team relay race, she finished silver behind the Russian team together with her brother and the pair Kristens Putins & Karlis Kris Matuzels . In the next race in Igls Aparjode was 15th with 65 points, she finished the series after only two races in 20th place overall. The 2015 World Championships in Sigulda, where she finished 26th, were the highlight of the season .

In the 2015/16 season , Aparjode also competed in both the women's junior and women's World Cup. At the start of the season in Sigulda she was third and only had to admit defeat to the Russians Olesya Mikhaylenko and Lilija Burmistrova. Further top ten results followed in Königssee (7th), Igls (10th), Altenberg (5th) and Oberhof (4th). The race in Altenberg was also the 2016 Junior European Championships , in which she also came in fifth. At the Junior World Championships 2016 in Winterberg , Aparjode finished ninth. In Altenberg she then started in the women’s World Cup and finished 18th. It was also the European Championships in 2016 , in which she placed Lettin in 13th place. At the next World Cup race in Winterberg, Aparjode was 18th with 46 points, she finished 34th in the overall ranking of the World Cup.

On the way to the top of the world

Since the 2016/17 season , Aparjode no longer competes with the juniors, but only with the women. In Winterberg she just missed the World Cup race as 28th of the Nations Cup. After it was not used for three races, it was nominated for the World Cup in Königssee, which was also the European Junior Championships . In the Nations Cup race she missed the main race by one place in 13th place. In the context of the European Championship she was 18th. The following race in Sigulda brought a third place behind Wiktorija Demtschenko and Martina Kocher in the Nations Cup, the subsequent World Cup race she finished 17th. It remained the best result of the season, she was in the overall ranking of the World Cup 89 points 30th, in the Nations Cup with 216 points eleventh. The highlight of the season was the 2017 World Championships in Igls. Aparjode was 20th, in the separate ranking of the U-23 World Cup eighth.

The 2017/18 season brought a steady increase in performance. Aparjode started the season with a poor 42nd place in the Nations Cup race in bin Igls. In the second race of the season she managed to qualify again as 12th of the Nations Cup race for the World Cup race, in which she finished 19th. After that, too, she consistently qualified for the World Cup races, and Latvian finished tenth in the overall ranking of the Nations Cup. In Lillehammer, Aparjode was able to reach the top ten places in the World Cup for the first time in tenth place. This was the first time she qualified for a sprint race, which she finished fifth. The final breakthrough to the top of the world came at the home races in Sigulda. As 12th of the individual race, she was able to qualify again for the sprint race, in which she only had to admit defeat by Tatjana Iwanowa and Natalie Geisenberger and achieved her first podium finish. With 311 points she was 18th overall at the end of the season. In the team relay race she reached third place with Inārs Kivlenieks and the doubles Andris Šics & Juris Šics . The races in Lillehammer were also the 2018 European Championships , during which Aparjode won bronze medals in the sprint races and the team relay. She was fifth in the individual race. For career highlight at the end of the season were 2018 Olympic Winter Games from Pyeongchang . The Latvian finished 22nd in her first games.

Even after the preseason , Aparjode's development continued steadily. The season opener started with a ninth place in the individual and eleventh place in the sprint of Igls. Further good results followed with seventh place in Whistler and ninth in Königssee. In Sigulda, she first won the Nations Cup. Then she was fifth in the individual race, which she qualified as the best Latvian for the sprint race. In this she was able to achieve the first ever Latvian World Cup victory with her brother and the double Oskars Gudramovičs & Pēteris Kalniņš . The 2019 World Championships followed in Winterberg. First Aparjode was eleventh in the sprint competition, in her individual race she fell. The 2019 European Championships in Oberhof ended the 15th at the season finale, the Latvian was able to prove her class again when she was fourth in both the sprint and individual races in Sochi and in the team relay with her brother and the Šics brothers behind Russia and Germany took third place.

The 2019/20 season began for Aparjode with a weaker appearance in Igls. She finished the first race of the season in 27th place. At the next World Cup station in Lake Placid , she was able to improve again and finished 12th in the individual and tenth in the sprint race; in Whistler it continued in a similar way (eleven and ten). In Altenberg followed with fifth places in the individual as well as with the relay top placements. She finished ninth at the 2020 European Championships in Lillehammer. The home World Cup in Sigulda brought eleventh place in the individual race and fourth place in the sprint. In Oberhof she was sixth in the individual and with her brother and the Šics brothers again third in the team relay race. At the 2020 World Championships in Sochi, Aparjode just missed her first international individual medal in fourth place. She was sixth in the sprint. In the relay race she won - again with her brother and the Šics brothers - the silver medal behind the German team and thus achieved her greatest international success to date. With 457 points, she was eighth in the overall World Cup and was the best Latvian for the first time, as she relegated Elīza Cauce to ninth place by one point.

Orienteering

In addition to sledding, Aparjode also does orienteering . She took part in the 2015 Junior World Championships in Rauland . She finished 90 in both distance and sprint races. With the Latvian relay she came in 15th.
