Kenneth Riegel

Kenneth Riegel (born April 29, 1938 in West Hamburg , Berks County , Pennsylvania ) is an American opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

His parents were Robert Lee and Arlene Riegel, who came from Womelsdorf , where Riegel grew up. The singer attended Womelsdorf Elementary School and Conrad Weiser High , which he graduated in 1956. This was followed by a music degree at West Chester University .

As a singer, Kenneth Riegel performed for more than 30 years at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City , the Paris Opera , Rome , the Vienna State Opera , Boston and New York. In Paris he took over the role of Alwa in the world premiere of the three-act version of Alban Berg's opera Lulu , which he later sang at the Metropolitan Opera. In 1983 he sang the role of Leper in the world premiere of Olivier Messiaen's opera “St. Francois d'Assise ”.

In 1975 Riegel made his debut at the Salzburg Festival with the role of Doctor Marianus in Mahler's Eighth under Leonard Bernstein . Until 1996 he returned regularly to the city of Mozart, among other things for the operatic roles of Herod in Salome (1992 and 1993) and Aegist in Elektra (1996).
