Kepler Track
The Kepler Track is a three to four day circular hike in Fiordland National Park on the South Island of New Zealand , which is part of the Great Walks . The 60 kilometer circular route leads past two of the largest lakes on the South Island, Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri . It leads through the southern beech forest and has an alpine section with an excellent view of Lake Te Anau and the Jackson Peaks. The highest point of the trail is the Luxmore Saddle at an altitude of 1400 meters, the lowest is at 180 meters on Lake Manapouri. Like the Kepler Mountains that it traverses, the track is named after Johannes Kepler .
The track is under the administration of the Department of Conservation (DOC). In contrast to many other tracks in New Zealand, which have their origins in old Māori trails, the Kepler Track was created in 1988 to relieve the much-traveled Milford Track and the Routeburn Track . The best season is between November and April.
An ultramarathon called the Kepler Challenge has been held on the track in December since 1988 . Martin Dent has held the track record for this trail run since 2013 with a time of 4:33:37.
