The Ascó nuclear power plant is located in eastern Spain directly on the Ebro , north of the municipality of Ascó near Tarragona . The power plant consists of two pressurized water reactors of the US Westinghouse Electric . The Ascó-1 reactor has an installed capacity of 1033  MW , block 2 1035 MW. Unit 1 became critical for the first time on June 16, 1983 , and Unit 2 on September 11, 1985. The Ascó 1 power plant unit was first synchronized with the grid on August 13, 1983, and Ascó 2 on October 23, 1985.

Accidents

  • In an incident on November 28, 2007, radioactive particles totaling 84.95 million Becquerel were released into the environment. However, the operating company did not inform the supervisory authorities ("Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear", CSN) until April 4, 2008, and only incompletely. On April 15, 2008, the incident was classified as level 2 of the INES .
  • On October 14, 2009 it was reported that the two emergency diesel generators for Block 2 were "not available" due to a faulty component.
  • On May 1, 2011 it was announced that on April 28, 2011, 25,000 liters of radioactive water had already escaped from the cooling circuit of reactor I. According to eyewitness reports, the water is said to have been ankle-deep in the reactor building. 14 employees had to be decontaminated. The operator Endesa reported that the contamination could only be detected on the shoes and protective clothing. The skin of the employees did not come into contact with the water.

The operator is 85% owned by Endesa and 15% by Iberdrola .
