Gentilly , Québec's only nuclear power plant , is located in Bécancour , near the city of Trois-Rivières . It was built in several phases between 1966 and 1983 by Hydro-Québec , a state-owned company in the province of Québec.

Gentilly-1 reactor

Gentilly-1 was the prototype of the CANDU - BWR , which was developed on the basis of design for a Siedeschwerwasserreaktor. The reactor had several novel functions including vertically oriented pressure pipes and light water coolant. These properties should reduce costs. It was built for an output power of 250  MW . With this low output and reduced costs, it was hoped that it would be an export hit for developing countries. However, expectations have not been met. In seven years of operation, due to numerous technical problems, electricity was only fed into the grid on 180 days. The reactor was then shut down.

Gentilly-2 reactor

Gentilly-2 was a standard CANDU reactor similar to the one at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Power Plant . The reactor had a maximum output of 638 MW. Unlike its predecessor, Gentilly-1, Gentilly-2 has had an excellent maintenance record since opening in 1983. Although it contributed only 3% to Quebec's electricity production (the province has large hydroelectric plants in the north), it was announced on August 19, 2008 that the The reactor was to be refurbished for 1.9 billion C $ and should continue to run until 2040.

A 500 MW gas turbine for generating electricity is also located on the site of the reactor .

Gentilly 2 was finally shut down on December 28, 2012. This makes the reactor at the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant in the province of New Brunswick , which was commissioned in the same year as Gentilly-2, the last remaining Canada outside the province of Ontario .
