The Hartlepool Nuclear Power Plant is located near the town of Hartlepool in North East England . It consists of two reactors of the AGR type , each with a net output of 595 megawatts . The nuclear power plant is operated by British Energy . The two reactors generate over 3 percent of the UK's electricity .
Construction began in 1968. The first Hartlepool-A1 reactor became critical for the first time on August 1, 1983 . The second reactor was commissioned on October 31, 1984. After a closure was originally planned for 2019, it was announced in 2013 that the nuclear power plant would not be shut down until 2024 .
The operator is currently considering whether the Hartlepool site would be suitable for the construction of a new nuclear power plant, but this is met with protests from both Greenpeace and the local population.
