history

Kerzers was at the time of the Romans on the important road from Aventicum ( Avenches ) to Salodurum ( Solothurn ). The historical evidence in Cartris Villa (926), Kercers (1153), Chiertri (1228), Kertzerz (1276) and Chiertres (1285) allow a Latin name ad Carcerem or ad Carcares to be reconstructed, which means, among other things, «in the fencing» at the dungeon »means.

The early Burgundian Queen Bertha donated the church to Payerne Abbey in 961 . On May 16, 1382, Freiburg bought the Inselgau (today's Seeland) with all the villages up to Bellmund and Port including Kerzers (see also Aarberg ) for 1050 guilders . After minor wars and arbitration negotiations, Freiburg lost almost the entire area in the course of time, first to Savoy, then to Bern, except for those areas of the Zealand that still belong to Freiburg today. During the Laupenkriegs in 1339 Kerzers was reduced to rubble and ashes.

Kerzers was subject to the Counts of Savoy until the Murten region was conquered by the Bernese and Freiburg residents in 1475 . Subsequently, it was ruled as common rule (joint property) by Freiburg im Üechtland and Bern , and both alternately provided the bailiff for five years each. When Charles the Bold's troops besieged Murten in 1476 , the village was again destroyed in a conflagration.

On May 15, 1479 Kerzers received a new letter of freedom, which was very similar to that of Murten: When the two cities met for the annual accounts for Murten and Eschallens, "and our treasury, which Kerzers deserved, came for us and gave us an old letter for her Those who contain freedoms with a humble pleading, who because the same has given something in writings and symbols, to videmire the same and to have it renewed at their own expense. " This was not considered unreasonable, since these freedoms had been confirmed to them earlier by the Savoy rule in letters that were lost in the Burgundian Wars. Among other things, those of Kerzers are granted in this new letter of freedom to have their own "meat bowl" and bath room as well as their own Weibel and Bannwart . In the following it is also mentioned that nobody is allowed to graze on the Kerzers soil for more than three days, unless he wants to winter in the rule of Murten.

In 1528 the Council of Bern decided to carry out the Reformation in its sphere of influence. This approach led in the Murten area to disputes with the Catholic Freiburg, which demanded a survey of the population in order to solve the problem. Bern had to respond to this request, but delayed the immediate vote in Kerzers and appointed reform preachers. The required vote did not take place until 1530, after which the Reformation was introduced in Kerzers at the third attempt thanks to a narrow majority.

Legend has it that Bern did not want to rebuild the burned down church in Kerzers, but Freiburg followed the request of the local residents to rebuild it: As a result, Bern and Freiburg agreed as follows: Freiburg built a new church in Kerzers and at its own expense Bern took over the payment of the pastors forever. The regulation is still valid today and was incorporated into the relevant State Treaty between Bern and Freiburg from 1889.

With the invasion of Switzerland by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798, common rule ended, and in 1803, after the end of the Helvetic Republic , Kerzers was finally assigned to the canton of Friborg. (See also under Murten .)

The first Jura water correction was built between 1868 and 1888 . As a result of the associated amelioration and urbanization of the Grosse Moos , more intensive vegetable cultivation became possible from 1900 onwards. Since 1996, the Grosses Moos biotope association has been working with agriculture to upgrade the landscape as a habitat for flora and fauna.

economy

Today there are 48 farms in Kerzers. While there were over 50 milk suppliers in the middle of the 20th century, their number has fallen to less than 5. The farms have specialized in vegetable growing and supply the local vegetable trading companies that have settled in the industrial and commercial zone. The favorable traffic situation has meant that various transport companies and suppliers have set up shop. The proximity to Bern also means that the community has a high commuter balance.

politics

After the municipal council elections in March 2016, the seven-member council consists of members of the FDP (2), SVP (3), CVP (1) and SP (1). Nicole Schwab (SVP) has been mayor since 2016.
