Kevin Schläpfer (born November 24, 1969 in Basel ) is a former Swiss ice hockey player who won the Swiss championship with HC Lugano , among others .
Player career
Kevin Schläpfer began his career as an ice hockey player in the junior division of Zunzgen-Sissach. He then played for EHC Basel in National League B from 1986 to 1988 , before playing for HC Lugano and EV Zug in National League A for two seasons until 1992 . With Lugano he became Swiss champions for the first and only time in his career in the 1989/90 season . Before the 1992/93 season, the attacker signed with the NLB club EHC Olten , with whom he was promoted to the NLA straight away.
After he could not prevent the direct relegation with his team, he joined HC Lausanne after another year in the NLB , with whom he played in the NLA in the 1995/96 season. After only one season, the Swiss left the team and until his retirement in 2006 played exclusively in the NLB for the SCL Tigers , the EHC Chur , EHC Biel and the SC Langenthal . With the Bielers he won the championship of the National League B in the 2003/04 season . In 2006 he ended his playing career.
Trainer and functionary career
Following the end of his career as a player, Schläpfer took over the position of sports director at EHC Biel in 2006. In this position he played a major role in promoting the EHC to the NLA in 2008. He jumped in twice during his tenure (2009 and 2010) as an interim coach. For the 2010/11 season he was appointed head coach of the EHC. He led the Bielers into the playoffs three times, in 2012, 2013 and 2015. In the 2015/16 season Biel threatened to qualify for the league under Schläpfer's leadership: The relegation was canceled because HC Ajoie, as the NLB champions, did not participate in the league qualification. In November 2016, he was dismissed from ten games following a series of nine defeats. Because of his services, he enjoyed a great reputation among the supporters in Biel, in the media reports on the occasion of his dismissal he was dubbed a “cult coach”, “figure of identification” and “hockey god”. On October 24, 2017, EHC Kloten announced the commitment of Kevin Schläpfer with a contract term until the end of the 2019/20 season. He only stayed in office until the beginning of April 2018, when he was given leave of absence from the EHC, who was in acute danger of relegation due to the sporting situation.
At the beginning of March 2019, SC Langenthal announced Schläpfer's commitment as sporting director with the start of the 2019/20 season.
