In Denmark , as in Sweden and Finland , there has been no regional registration system since 1968 . The license plate begins with two letters followed by a five-digit number combination.

Since 1976, the signs have generally shown black letters on a white or yellow background and a red frame. In 2008 a new, tighter font was introduced. On October 12, 2009, Denmark became the penultimate country in the EU to introduce the euro plate .

The EU symbol is not mandatory, however, the vehicle owner can choose whether he wants a license plate with or without an EU symbol. A security strip follows the EU field on the right.

Number combination

The type of vehicle can be seen from the combination of numbers. Desired labels from any combination of letters and numbers are possible.

  • The royal family uses special marks on which a crown is depicted.
  • The Danish Armed Forces use special black markings with white writing. A coat of arms appears at the beginning of the shield, which indicates whether it is an army , navy or air force vehicle . Newer signs show a uniform symbol for all armed forces.
  • Fire brigade vehicles have their own license plates (usually with the guard's coat of arms).
  • Danish Civil Protection (DEMA) vehicles have their own license plates in blue with yellow digits
    Identification of the DEMA
  • Export license plates have a red field with the year of validity and a five-digit number on the left half of the label.

The two letters at the beginning of the label were assigned in ascending order, starting with AA and ending with ZZ . Individual combinations such as KZ are not issued. GR is reserved for license plates from Greenland . In the meantime, combinations with previously unassigned letters (F, G and W) are also displayed.

It is foreseeable that the current system of awarding contracts will have come to an end in the next few years. Due to the strong growth in motor vehicles in Denmark, the number and letter combinations will not be sufficient. For this reason, a new system is already being considered.

In order not to have to introduce a new system, it was decided to reassign previously used license plates. It was thus started again with AA .

License plate colors

There are different license plate colors:

  • White background, black lettering and red border: private vehicles
  • Yellow background, black lettering and border: vehicles for commercial use
  • Yellow background on the left, white background on the right, black lettering and border: Commercial vehicles with private use (since March 1, 2008)
  • Blue background, white text: Diplomatic Corps
  • Black background, white lettering (design from before 1976): Oldtimer
  • Red background, white lettering: airport vehicles

License plates for trucks and vehicles registered as trucks are yellow and are given in the format XX 12345. It is possible to register a car as a truck if there are only front seats. The maximum weight and maximum load must then be specified on the vehicle (usually on the side) and a barrier must be installed behind the driver's seat. This means that there is a lower registration fee (but a higher vehicle tax).

Hearse are an exception. These are theoretically commercial vehicles, but for reasons of piety they are regarded as passenger cars, but are exempt from the registration fee and have white license plates.

Others

People living in Denmark are not allowed to drive vehicles registered outside Denmark in Denmark unless the owner is in the vehicle.

There have been exceptions to this rule since 2009 at the latest, if z. B. the person residing in Denmark is employed or self-employed abroad and drives most of the mileage abroad. However, this requires official approval, which must be applied for from “Skat”, the tax authority.
