The current license plate of Qatar were introduced in December 2011th They show a stylized Qatari flag with the white inscription QATAR in Latin characters on the left edge, based on the Euro license plate . The country name follows on a white background in Arabic script ( Arabic قطر Qatar , DMG Qaṭar ). The actual registration consists of six digits. There is also a hologram seal on the shield, which is supposed to make counterfeiting more difficult. Qatari license plates are issued in both US size and European standard size (520 × 110 mm).

From 1997 to 2011, the signs also had black text on a white background. They first showed the country name in Arabic script ( Arabic قطر Qatar , DMG Qaṭar ) and a two-digit number that encrypted the vehicle type. ٠١ (01) stood for private vehicles. The actual registration consisted of a maximum of six digits, which appear on the license plate in both Arabic and Latin characters. There was also a sticker on the license plate that indicated the maximum validity of the approval in Arabic characters.

1983–1997 license plates with a green background were used. The signs were divided into four fields, with the country name and vehicle type always appearing on the left in both Arabic and English (QATAR) . The registration number consisting of a maximum of six digits was shown on the right.
