The pine foam cicada ( Aphrophora corticea ) belongs to the round head cicadas (Cicadomorpha) from the family of foam cicadas (Aphrophoridae).

features

The pine foam cicada reaches a body length of 8–11 mm. The cicadas are easy to identify by their dark and light brown pattern.

distribution

The species is widespread in Europe. It is absent in the British Isles. In the east they occur as far as Asia Minor .

Way of life

The cicadas fly from June to October. They are mainly found in coniferous forests, especially with spruce stands. The adults suckle on the shoots and branches of the Norway spruce ( Picea abies ) and Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ) in spring . The species is an egg hibernator. The larvae develop on the heather family (Ericaceae).
