Kildonan Castle

Kildonan Castle is the ruin of a Spur castle in the village of Kildonan on the south coast of the Isle of Arran in Scotland administrative unit North Ayrshire . The name of the castle and village is derived from the name of a previous inhabitant, St. Donan , who is said to be buried on the island.

history

The castle was built in the 13th century by Clan MacDonald , the Lords of the Isles . It stands on the cliffs above Pladda Island and the entrance to the Firth of Clyde . It was used to repel enemies attacking across the Firth.

Kildonan Castle was built by the kings of Scotland, for example Robert III. , used as a hunting lodge as long as the island belonged to the Crown. In 1544 the castle became the property of the Earls of Arran .

description

The remains consist of a tower with a rectangular floor plan, covering an area of 6.7 meters by 8.7 meters. At the northwest corner, the rubble is 11-12 meters high. Originally the tower had three floors, the first of which was divided in height by a wooden floor. The ground floor and first floor had vaulted ceilings . The upper floors had wooden ceilings.

There are remains of a ditch carved into the rock 3–4 meters east of the tower. This presumably continued to the north and west, but these parts are now filled.

Historic Scotland has listed Kildonan Castle as a Scheduled Monument .
