Killing in the Name is an American documentary film directed by Jed Rothstein in 2010. The film is about Islamist terrorism . He was nominated for an Oscar in 2011 for Best Documentary Short Film, but lost to Strangers No More .

action

The documentary revolves around Ashraf Al-Khaled, at whose wedding party in 2005 a suicide bomber blew himself up, killing 27 members of Al-Khaled's family and his wife Nadia Alami. The attack became an opportunity for Ashraf Al-Khaled to speak to victims and perpetrators of Islamist terrorism. The film shows his search for the causes of terrorism, including speaking to an al-Qaeda recruiter . In addition to Al-Khaled's case, the film covers the 2002 Bali attack , which killed 202 people, and the 2005 Hilla attack , which killed 127 people.

background

According to Jed Rothstein , his impetus for such a documentation came from the question of the reason for the suicide bombings during the height of the Iraq war , which Rothstein describes as "violence that was clearly directed against civilians". The making of the film was developed by Carie Lemack , executive producer of the film. Her aim was to describe terrorism from the perspective of its victims. This concern led to Ashraf Al-Khaled, which Lemack for the first time on a Symposium of the United Nations met on "victims of terrorism" in the year of 2008. The meeting led to the founding of the Global Survivors Network , which co-produced the film.

publication

The film premiered on July 28, 2010 at the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival , where the film won the Best Documentary Award. It was also shown in a total of nine countries in three different languages. In September 2011, the cable broadcaster Home Box Office first broadcast the documentary on US television.
