Kim Sinclair

Kim Sinclair (born July 10, 1954 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand production designer and art director . He won an Oscar in 2010 for his work on the film Avatar .

Life

Sinclair attended the Auckland Grammar School and then completed a degree in architecture at the University of Auckland , which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1978 . He then worked as a freelance architect until 1983.

One of his first film projects was in 1988 working as art director on the film Willow , which was directed by director Ron Howard based on a story by George Lucas . Other successful Hollywood films followed, including Vertical Limit and Cast Away with Tom Hanks , for whom he was responsible for the production design on the Fiji Islands .

In 2001, Sinclair won the New Zealand Film and TV Award in the Best Design category for Her Majesty . In 2004, he was nominated for the Art Director Guilds Award for Last Samurai .

For his work as supervising art director and set decorator for James Cameron's Avatar - Departure for Pandora from 2009, he won an Oscar in the category Best Production Design at the 2010 Academy Awards together with Rick Carter and Robert Stromberg . Further awards for this film were a BAFTA Award, also in the category Best Production Design, and an honor from the Art Directors Guild .
