Kim Young-sam (born December 20, 1927 in Geoje , Korea , † November 22, 2015 in Seoul , South Korea ) was President of South Korea from February 25, 1993 to February 25, 1998 . After 32 years the country had a civilian head of state again.

Life

Kim graduated from Seoul National University in 1952 and was first elected to the South Korean National Assembly in 1954. During the 1970s and 1980s he was a leading opposition politician along with Kim Dae-jung . When the first democratic parliamentary elections took place in 1987 after the resignation of ex-general Chun Doo-hwan , Kim Young-sam and Kim Dae-jung ran against each other and thus enabled ex-general Roh Tae-woo - the candidate supported by Chun Doo-hwan - the election victory. In 1990, Kim and Roh's parties merged to form a conservative ruling party. As a result, Kim Young-sam won the presidential election on December 18, 1992 against Kim Dae-jung. He then eliminated the influence of the military on politics by 1998, in particular by bringing Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo to justice for their role in the 1979 military coup. The ban on anonymous bank accounts ripped the soil out of corruption . Although Kim tried to reform the Jaebeol (family-controlled industrial conglomerates), his name is mainly associated with the Asian crisis , the South Korean version of which began in 1997 with the collapse of Kia Motors .

Kim's tenure was marred by several major disasters, such as the collapse of Seongsu Bridge in Seoul, the sinking of a ship and the accident of flight 801 of Korean Air .

Kim died on 22 November 2015 at the age of 87 years in the Seoul National University Hospital at a sepsis .
