King Mob

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

King Mob was a radical actionist London artist group .

The British section of the Situationist International was excluded in 1967 because of its ties to the anarchist New York artist group Up Against The Wall Motherfuckers , and its members founded King Mob. The name is derived from the slogan His Majesty King Mob , which was smeared on the walls of Newgate Prison in London by those involved in the Gordon Riots , a Protestant riot against Catholic equality at the end of the 18th century. The name translates as “King Mob” and expresses the anti-state and anarchist tendencies of the group.

In one of their actions, a king bully dressed as Santa Claus gave away toys to children in a London department store. The police called in then had to take the goods from the children, who watched in disbelief as Santa Claus was arrested. One of the 25 participants in the action was Malcolm McLaren , later manager of the Sex Pistols .

King Mob is also one of the main characters in Grant Morrison's comic The Invisibles .
