The pilgrimage church of Maria Schnee ( Kościół pielgrzymkowy Matki Boskiej Śnieżnej ) is located in the Kłodzko Snow Mountains below the Pointed Mountain ( Góra Igliczna ) near Międzygórze ( Wölfelsgrund ) in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland .

history

For a long time, residents of the former County of Glatz made pilgrimages to the distant pilgrimage site of Mariazell in Styria, Austria . From such a pilgrimage in 1750, the farmer's son Christoph Veit from Wölfelsdorf brought a copy of the Mariazeller miraculous image carved out of wood and hung it on a tree on his own ground below the Spitzigen Mountain. The residents of the area now make pilgrimages to this miraculous image, for which they soon built a wooden chapel .

According to tradition, the blind son of Laurentius Franke gained his sight in 1777 after praying at the miraculous image. More and more people then made pilgrimages to this place.

1781–1782 , a small baroque-style church was built on the site of the wooden chapel as a donation from the Glatzer Governor Michael Wenzel von Althann , who owned the Wölfelsdorf estate . The construction work was led by builder Andreas Jäger and master carpenter Josef Knietig from Wölfelsdorf. After its completion, the church was looked after by a hermit and belonged to the parish of Wölfelsdorf. It was consecrated on October 22nd, 1782 by the Vicar General Karl Winter on behalf of the Prague Archbishop Anton Peter Příchovský von Příchovice . Based on the model of the Roman basilica Maria Maggiore , it was named " Maria Schnee ".

The tower was built in 1784 and the church around the church in 1821. At the same time, the then pastor Larisch arranged the construction of a Way of the Cross with 14 stations from the church to the top of the mountain. During the tenure of pastor Peter Nonnast in 1897 the neo-baroque altar and the figural group "Coronation of Mary" were delivered by the architect Joseph Elsner from his Munich workshops for church art . The miraculous image was added to the altar. The colored glass windows were supplied by the Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt from Munich from 1903 to 1913 . The Austrian history painter Wilhelm von Wörndle , who had lived in Glatz since around 1900 , created the frescoes "Annunciation" and "Visitation of Mary" .

In the dealership there are paintings on the history of the place of grace as well as numerous popular votive offerings and votive pictures that testify to the gratitude for the help received. Some of the votive pictures come from the well-known painters Wilhelm Reinsch from Bad Landeck and Hieronymus Richter from Glatz.

On June 21, 1983 the image of Our Lady was crowned by Pope John Paul II . He had already visited this place of grace in 1961 and 1968.
