The Church of the Dormition of Our Lady ( Arabic كنيسة رقاد السيدة العذراء Kanisa riqad as-Sayida al-eadhra ' , French église de la Dormition-de-la-Mère-de-Dieu ) is a historic Greek Orthodox church from the 15th century in al- Judaide (Jdeydé), the Christian quarter of the Syrian city of Aleppo . The church building is home to over 100 icons and iconostases from the Aleppo School. After severe damage in the civil war, reconstruction began in 2018.

history

The Dormition Church was built around 1500 in an area of Judaide, also known as al-Saliba (الصليبة as-Saliba , fromالصليب as-Salib 'the cross') became known.

The Dormition Church was first mentioned in an Armenian manuscript by Movses Vardapet - as one of three churches that were enlarged and renovated by the donation of the Armenian nobleman Reyis Baron Yesayi . The other two churches were the Forty Martyrs Cathedral and the Maronite Cathedral of Saint Elias .

The Italian traveling salesman Pietro Della Valle , who visited Aleppo in 1625, mentioned the Greek Orthodox Church as the Church of St. George and as one of the four churches lined up within a gate in the newly founded Christian quarter of Judaide. The other three churches were the Armenian Church of the Forty Martyrs, the Armenian Holy Mother of God Church (the current Zarehian Treasury), and the old Maronite Church of Saint Elias.

In 1822 the church was badly damaged by an earthquake, but was later rebuilt.

During the civil war in Syria , the Dormition Church was severely damaged by shelling on the roof, the central dome and the vault. Restoration work began in 2018. In April of that year, the church, which was still being rebuilt, was reopened for Easter mass.
