Kissi (people)

The Kissi are an ethnic group in West Africa . They are located in Liberia , Sierra Leone and southern Guinea ( Forest Guinea ) and have a population of around 526,000. Almost 176,000 Kissi live in Sierra Leone (as of 2015), who make up 2.5 percent of the country's total population.

Their language is the Atlantic language Kissi , although many other, more common languages, such as Mende , Temne or Krio in Sierra Leone , also use it. There are Christians as well as Muslims and animists among the Kissi. The elderly play an important role in the Kissi society. The circumcision of women and girls is widespread among them.

Typical Kissi names are Saa , Saah , Sarh (first son) and Tamba (second son) for boys and Sia (first daughter), Kumba (second daughter) and Finda (third daughter) for girls .

Most kissi are planters , their main source of nutrition is rice , which they specialize in growing. Everyday life is determined by planting in the rainy season and harvesting and processing in the dry season. Dry rice is grown on the mountain slopes and ridges of the southern wet savannah. Wet rice is grown in the northern rainforest without artificial irrigation, but in natural swamps of valley basins that are crossed by rivers . They are called bafond by the Kissi and other ethnic groups .
