history

13th Century

The Nicolaimarkt, on which Kläschen goes back, is the city's oldest fair . It is closely related to the construction of the Nicolaikirche . The "mass" in St. Nicolai on December 6th - consecrated to St. Nicholas as the patron saint of seafarers and (Hanseatic) merchants - for the merchants who returned from their travels in autumn and for the residents of Lemgos and the surrounding area was an essential date. which was solemnly celebrated. In addition to the actual ecclesiastical celebration elements, additional secular elements soon developed, until the celebration finally became a purely secular one.

19th century

In the 19th century, the market was primarily a sales show to which the residents of the villages came to the city. Stalls were set up in the halls of the inns adjacent to the market square.

20th century

In the early 20th century, the market lost its importance as a shopping market for the rural population. Instead, the number of show booths and carousels increased. Kläschen therefore had to be expanded spatially. In 1910, as stated in a report by the "Lippische Post", two steam and floor carousels, a Russian carousel, a ship swing, three shooting galleries and 17 show booths were represented on the Kläschenmarkt, including a hippodrome and a menagerie with 15 lions and Tigers.

A cinematograph was also one of the attractions. But singers and small artists also came to Lemgo for Klächsen. The "Lippische Post" wrote in the run-up to the market in 1912: "The harp singers and the various artists such as ventriloquists, etc., who take care of the maintenance of the inns, will appear again. The latest hits will then be the Loud be sung and bring life everywhere. "

The market established itself permanently in the city center as early as the early 20th century. Before the First World War, it stretched from Kastanienwall over Mittelstrasse and the market square to the newly created orphanage square (after the orphanage was demolished).
