Klaus Dietrich Eberhard Friedland (born June 28, 1920 in Erfurt ; † March 21, 2010 in Kiel ) was a German historian , archivist and librarian . From 1970 to 1985 he was director of the Schleswig-Holstein State Library in Kiel.

Life

Klaus Friedland joined the Navy on October 1, 1938 as an officer candidate and served here until May 8, 1945, most recently as a first lieutenant at sea. In 1943 he was submarine commander for a few months. From 1945 to 1952 Friedland studied history, ancient history and Latin philology at the Universities of Kiel and Oxford . In Kiel he was in 1952 when Wilhelm Koppe Dr. phil. doctorate ("The struggle of the city of Lübeck with their sovereigns"). In 1953 he passed the state examination. From 1955 to 1962 he was active in the secondary school service in Göttingen . In 1962 he came to the archives of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck as an archivist and worked there until 1969. In 1970 he became director of the Schleswig-Holstein State Library and managed it until his retirement in 1985.

From 1965 Klaus Friedland worked as a lecturer (since 1971 as honorary professor) for historical auxiliary sciences at the history seminar of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel.

Friedland made a name for himself as a historian through numerous publications. His research areas included the history of the Hanseatic League , the history of the city of Lübeck, and the history of northern European economics, merchants and seafaring. Much of his work as an author and editor was related to his many years of activity in the Hanseatic History Association .
