Klaus Thomas Steindl (born June 20, 1966 in Graz , Austria ) is an Austrian film director, screenwriter and producer as well as owner of the company KREATIVkraft.

Career

Steindl graduated from the Stift Rein grammar school and then completed the studies of "directing" and "stage design" at the University of Art in Graz (previously "University of Music and Performing Arts"). After an assistant director at the Opera House in Nice , he worked as a freelance director for experimental theater. From 1991 he switched to the film industry. After several commercials (including the Austrian State Prize for Economic Film), he concentrated on making TV documentaries. His specialties include wildlife and nature films, investigative documentaries on historical topics and docu-dramas, with lavishly staged game scenes taking up a large space in the latter two categories. Klaus T. Steindl's TV docu-drama " Margarethe Ottillinger - The Woman Who Knew Too Much" with actress Ursula Strauss in the lead role was also shown in the cinema after it was first broadcast on television.

Ursula Strauss on the shooting of "Margarethe Ottillinger" : " We made a feature film in six days, so to speak. That was exhausting because some scenes were pretty intense ."

In May 2017, the cultural broadcaster ARTE opened its one-week anniversary program "25 Years ARTE" with the German / French TV premiere of Steindl's documentary drama "Venice and the Ghetto" in a feature film length (90 minutes).

plant

Steindl's catalog of works includes over 30 documentaries for the main evening program (as of 2017), more than half of which were co-produced with international partners, broadcast in numerous countries and many received awards - both in Europe and in the USA. With the international production " Die Vampirprinzessin ", which was published in 2007, Klaus T. Steindl played a key role in the development of what was then a new style for reenactment documentaries: The film presents clues in the style of a crime film with re-enacted game scenes and CSI- like special effects. Klaus T. Steindl is also one of the pioneers in the documentary area in terms of technology. So was z. B. his documentary "Wild Venice", which he co-produced with his company KREATIVkraft, the first 4K Ultra HD documentary on the Austrian public television broadcaster ORF.

In 2019, a docudrama about the Salzburg Merciful Sister Anna Bertha Königsegg was created for ORF . The focus of the film is a young journalist (Constanze Passin) who is on the trail of a case of extraordinary moral courage of a nun ( Maria Happel ) during the Nazi regime in 1948 . For the cinematic implementation of the story, the screenwriter and director Klaus T. Steindl took the path of maximum reduction: In contrast to conventional documentaries, the focus in "Sister Courage" is on two actresses. The action takes place in a single room, compressed into one afternoon. The "Kammerspiel" is carried by the presence of the two actresses Maria Happel and Constanze Passin. Fine nuances in looks and gestures, short, unpathetic dialogues, the precise lighting and, last but not least, the surreal, disembodied guitar sound in the background create an idiosyncratic pull.

Many of Klaus T. Steindl's works found their way into the educational media catalog for Austrian schools either in an adapted form or in multimedia presentation forms specially developed for this purpose, for which they have been awarded several Comenius EduMedia prizes.

Promotion of young talent

In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Klaus Steindl is also committed to promoting young talent. Together with a group of film and media enthusiasts, he launched the Kinder- und JugendFILMwerkstatt Graz (today fum Film und Medien Initiative) in 2002, for which he developed the educational concept and curriculum. For many years he was also a member of the Styrian Film Funding Committee for artistic film productions ("CineStyria Filmkunst", today "Cine Art"), as well as a member of the Board of the Documentary Campus , an international training institution and network platform for documentary filmmakers.
