Klaus Wengst

Klaus Wengst (born May 14, 1942 in Remsfeld ) is a German Protestant theologian and professor emeritus of the New Testament .

Life

After graduating from the König-Heinrich-Schule in Fritzlar , Wengst studied Protestant theology from 1961 to 1967 at the Bethel Church University , at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , at the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg and at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University Bonn , where he received his doctorate in 1967 and completed his habilitation in 1970.

From 1979 Wengst was initially an adjunct professor and from 1980 professor in Bonn and from 1981 until his retirement in 2007 professor for Protestant theology (New Testament) at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 1991 he was studying at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem .

Wengst held a number of honorary positions. He is a member of the working group Jews and Christians at the German Evangelical Church Congress and was its chairman from 1992 to 2006. From 1993 to 2003 he was chairman of the Evangelical Study Group on Church and Israel in Rhineland and Westphalia. He is chairman of the association KuKuC eV (art and culture in the Claudius-Höfe) and was the founder, chairman and then treasurer of the association for the promotion of the science of Judaism at the Ruhr University Bochum.

In addition to questions of social history, he increasingly dealt with the question of the relationship between the New Testament and Judaism. In 2012, the exegetical magazine Texte & Kontexte dedicated a two-part commemorative publication to his 70th birthday to honor his contributions to the Jewish context and character of the New Testament.
