Klaus Wittkugel (1985)

Klaus Wittkugel (born October 17, 1910 in Kiel ; † September 19, 1985 in Berlin ) was one of the most important commercial and poster artists in the GDR and a long-time professor at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art .

Life

After training as a businessman in Hamburg from 1927 to 1929, Klaus Wittkugel studied at the Folkwang School in Essen until 1932 , where he was a master student of Max Burchartz . After completing his studies, he moved to Berlin and worked as a commercial artist in a department store group until 1935. From 1935 to 1937 he headed the studio of a Berlin advertising agency. He then worked as a freelancer in Berlin until he was called up for military service in 1939.

After serving in the war and as a prisoner of war, Klaus Wittkugel worked as a commercial artist in the Central Office for Trade and Supply from 1945 to 1949. Subsequently, until 1952 he was chief graphic artist in the office for information . Klaus Wittkugel had been working as a lecturer at the University of Applied Arts in Berlin since 1949 and as a professor from 1952 until his retirement in 1975 . He had living space in the so-called intelligence settlement in Berlin-Schönholz , to which Straße 201 belongs.

In 1950 he was a founding member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR , first chairman of the commercial graphics section and from 1984 an honorary member. From 1961 Klaus Wittkugel was a member, from 1968 to 1974 Vice President of the Academy of the Arts .

As a member of the artistic advisory board of the stamp commission of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications of the GDR, Klaus Wittkugel was involved in the design of numerous stamps. Klaus Wittkugel designed a series of book covers and book covers .

His estate is administered by the Akademie der Künste .

He found his final resting place in a Pankow cemetery . The grave was reburied in Schöneiche in the 2000s.
