The Kleine Elster (formerly Dober, Dobŕa in Lower Sorbian ) is a right tributary of the Black Elster in Brandenburg ( Germany ).

geography

The Kleine Elster has its origin in the wetland Der Lug , about 12 km east of Finsterwalde , through the confluence of Mühlengraben and Lugkanal . Historically, monks from Dobrilugk Monastery saw their origins in 42 springs around Sallgast Castle . From here it flows in a westerly direction, passing Finsterwalde about 3 km to the north. At Frankena its course turns to the southwest, flows through Doberlug-Kirchhain and flows into the Black Elster in Wahrenbrück north of Bad Liebenwerda.

On its way from the origin to the mouth, the Kleine Elster overcomes a height difference of only 30 m, which corresponds to an average bed gradient of 0.6 ‰.

Flood protection and renaturation

With the increase in open-cast lignite mining in western Niederlausitz until the 1960s, the river caused floods, so that it flooded the inner city of Kirchhain over several winters. For this reason, a flood was created around the inner city of Kirchhain from 1969 to 1971. Even during the floods in 2010 , the lowland between Kirchhain and neighboring Lichtena was largely under water.

In May 2007, the NaturSchutzFonds Brandenburg started a project with the renaturation of the lower reaches of the Kleine Elster between Bad Liebenwerda and Doberlug-Kirchhain. For this purpose, old, natural river arms were reactivated. In addition to the landscaping, the main aim was to reduce the flow speed of the river in order to keep the water in the region longer. The project, with total costs of 1,768,568 euros, is considered exemplary in the region for improving the surface water situation. In April 2008 the project was presented to the public in the Elster-Natoureum in Maasdorf .
