Little Summer Sister ( Japanese 夏 の 妹 , Natsu no Imōto ) is a Japanese film by Nagisa Ōshima from 1972 .
action
Fourteen-year-old Sunaoko travels to Okinawa with her future stepmother Momoko to visit her ex-husband's son and possible brother Tsuruo Omura. The summer vacation on Okinawa begins with a letter in which Tsuruo invites his little sister. When the women meet Tsuruo, it turns out that they mistook Momoko for their sister.
criticism
The Lexicon of International Films noted, “The family tale, unfolded with a calm and cheerfulness reminiscent of Ozu, simultaneously makes the whole horror of the story palpable; the atrocities that unfolded in the war between Japan and Okinawa. The film looks like a holiday strip, the colors of the 16 mm copy blown up to 35 mm have the same unreal, utopian serenity as the music. The present and tradition, the private and the political are connected to a harmonious unity: Even the atonement of a Japanese at the end takes place with serenity. "
