action

Architect Michael Newman desperately wants to be promoted. He therefore takes on every assignment that his boss Ammer has in store for him. Due to his long working days, he increasingly neglects his wife Donna and their two children Ben and Samantha. Since he still has work to do at home, he feels that visiting his parents is a burden and is annoyed by family get-togethers. When he can no longer distinguish between the many remote controls in his living room and keeps switching on the wrong electrical devices, it is enough for him and he drives off to get a universal remote control for all devices. He ends up in a shop called Bed Bath & Beyond . While he was looking for such a remote control, he passed a large bed, in which he spontaneously lay down. Strange noises make him aware of a door that leads to the “Beyond” area. There he meets the quirky-looking Morty, who even gives him a special remote control, but at the same time tells him that he cannot return it.

Back home, Michael quickly discovers the special advantages of this remote control: He can use it not only to control electronic devices, but also his life and so on. B. regulate the volume of other people, pause situations, fast forward or skip entire chapters. He then uses this when skipping unloved situations, such as traffic jams, disputes, illnesses or foreplay to sex with his wife - without knowing, however, that his body goes into the so-called autopilot mode during this time, in which his mind is almost absent that seems impassive. Furthermore, he is not aware that the remote control can learn. This means that the remote control remembers the situations that Michael skipped and activates the skip the next time on its own.

After he has landed a significant job for his boss and believes he will be promoted, he showered his family with expensive gifts. However, his boss has no intention of promoting him yet, but tells him that he has to do a few more things first. Michael now uses the remote control to skip the chapters until his final promotion. Shortly afterwards, however, he realizes that he has skipped a whole year. Later, the remote control automatically causes him to skip another ten years when his boss just mentions a new promotion.

When he comes to, his entire world has completely changed: he and his son Ben have become very overweight, his wife Donna has left him and is now married to Ben's swimming coach (Bill). Michael suffers a concussion during an argument with the two of them. Again, the remote control automatically skips the disease. When he comes to six years later, his wife has remarried, his father has died and Michael is the boss of his own company.

Later, at his father's grave, Michael meets Morty again, who reveals to him that he is the angel of death. Michael wants to relive his last meeting with his father and learns that he had harshly rejected him at work in his office because he felt disturbed at work. Horrified by his own behavior, Michael asks Morty to be taken to a beautiful place and ends up at his son Ben's wedding. When he overhears his daughter Samantha calling her stepfather Bill "Dad", Michael has a heart attack. When he wakes up, his daughter and son are at the bedside with him, and Ben casually mentions that he canceled his honeymoon because he had important work to do.

Michael, who has now realized that he has completely neglected his family by concentrating on his job and that real life has passed him by in fast motion, now wants to prevent his son from making the same mistake as he does by all means. So excited by this realization, his heartbeat increases, causing his children to be sent home by hospital nurses before he can talk to his son. However, Michael overpowers a nurse who wants to hold him back and follows his son outside. But there he collapses on the street. Here his son becomes aware of him and rushes to him. Lying dying, he can once again confess his love to his ex-wife and tell his two children that family is the most important thing in life.

Next, Michael wakes up in Bed Bath & Beyond again . It seems like it was all just a dream. He goes home and resolves to work less and spend more time with his family. Suddenly he finds the special remote control again, wrapped as a gift. Enclosed a message from Morty: "I know you won't make a mistake this time." However, Michael throws it into the trash can without hesitation.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films says: "The comedy, which is burdened with numerous nonsense, never exhausts the tragic potential of the story and takes on rather penetrating traits through poorly timed gags and dialogues."

Mick LaSalle wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle that the film was the best American film of the year.

JR Jones wrote in the Chicago Reader that the film was the best film Sandler had ever starred in.

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was flawed, but it "worked". Berardinelli praised Adam Sandler's portrayal, which a few years ago would not have been possible.

Hannes Brühwiler wrote on Critic.de that the basic constellation of the film was reminiscent of “Harold Ramis' And the Groundhog Day Greetings , whereby this film masters the balancing act between comedy and tragedy much better without unnecessary pathos”. On the other hand, one painfully misses "the subtle nuances that characterize Ramis' comedy" in Klick.
