Knaack Club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Knaack Club was a Berlin club in the Pankow district . From 1952 to 2010 it was located at Greifswalder Straße 224 in the Winsviertel of the Prenzlauer Berg district and is now to be reopened on Eberswalder Straße.

history

founding

The Knaack goes back to the Ernst-Knaack-Jugendheim , which was built in its present location in 1952, after the tailoring shop, which had previously been located here since 1946, gave up its premises in July 1951. The first lease was signed on February 20, 1952. It was named after the resistance fighter Ernst Knaack , after whom the nearby Knaackstrasse was named. Initially, young people were to be withdrawn from the western influence of rock music under the motto sport and play , but dance events were also held in winter. For the 1973 World Festival of Youth and Students , the Knaack became a youth club with a disco. During the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Knaack was transformed into a discotheque based on the western model with several "floors". First of all, due to the large number of people on the first floor , the organizers occupied the basement, which used to be a casing laundry, and renovated it ( new casing laundry ). Then the Dizzy Lounge was set up and then the Concert Floor .

Various events took place in the Knaack during the week. In addition to the dance floors, the Dizzy Lounge was also a quieter area with billiards and karaoke . Concerts were held several times a week on the concert floor ; Rammstein (who also had their administration in the house), Die Toten Hosen and other well-known bands played here. Rammstein also used the premises as a rehearsal room.

End at Greifswalder Straße

Since 2009 there have been legal disputes with tenants of a newly built apartment building in the vicinity of the club because of nocturnal noise. At the beginning of February 2010 the Knaack was prohibited from exceeding a certain noise level after 10 p.m. From March 2010, Knaack's complaint was postponed, but this was lifted again in June 2010. According to the operators, after a ruling by the Higher Administrative Court, operation is no longer possible and the last event in Knaack took place on New Year's Eve 2010. “They [the operators] were not to blame for this. Rather, the Pankow building authority had simply forgotten to require the investors in the new building to install noise barriers. In the end, because of its sloppy work, the district office felt it was their duty to find a suitable new location for the Knaack. The previous building was rebuilt, 33 apartments and 2 retail units were planned. "

New opening

A reopening as the “Knaack Kulturhaus” at Mauerpark was initially planned for the beginning of 2016. The new property was found and the planning provided for a reopening in 2018. In 2013 there was already a Knaack summer party in the Mauerpark, but there were further delays for the actual construction project. In the meantime, the 2400 m² plot of land on Eberswalder Strasse has been transferred to Knaack Kulturhaus GbR as a heritable building lease and the Pankov district has approved the building application. Construction work should start in mid-2020; A three-story reinforced concrete building with a concert hall for 1000 people is planned and the old logo is also to be re-attached.
