history

The village of Knau was first mentioned in a document as early as 1150. The place belonged to the Wettin office of Altenburg , which was under the sovereignty of the following Ernestine duchies from the 16th century due to several divisions in the course of its existence : Duchy of Saxony (1554 to 1572), Duchy of Saxony-Weimar (1572 to 1603), Duchy of Saxony- Altenburg (1603 to 1672), Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1672 to 1826). When the Ernestine duchies were reorganized in 1826, the place came back to the duchy of Saxony-Altenburg. After the administrative reform in the duchy, it belonged to the eastern district (until 1900) and to the Altenburg district office (from 1900). From 1918 the village belonged to the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg , which was added to the State of Thuringia in 1920. On October 1, 1922, Knau was incorporated into the city of Altenburg. With the spin-off on August 1, 1924, Knau was again an independent municipality in the Altenburg district .

On April 1, 1935, Unterzetzscha was incorporated into Knau, which in turn was united with Oberzetzscha and Rautenberg to form the municipality of Zetzscha on July 1, 1950. During the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, the existing states were dissolved and the districts were redesigned. As a result, Knau came to the district of Leipzig as a district of the municipality of Zetzscha with the district of Altenburg , which had belonged to Thuringia as the district of Altenburg since 1990 and was added to the district of Altenburger Land in 1994. On February 11, 1994, Zetzscha and its districts were incorporated into Altenburg. Since then, Knau has been one of four places in the Altenburg district of Zetzscha.
