The Coming Balga was the oldest castle of the Teutonic Order in the area of today's Russian exclave Kaliningrad and from 1250 to 1499 the seat of a commander and an order convent .

history

In 1239 the order marshal Dietrich von Bernheim conquered the Prussian castle Balga . It was immediately expanded into a fortress of the order and, due to its location directly on the Fresh Lagoon, played an important role in controlling shipping traffic on the lagoon. From Balga the order conquered the Prussian tribal areas Warmia and Natangen . Balga was one of the most important commanderies in the state. The office of commander was regarded as the basis and touchstone for the appointment to higher offices.
