Commission for the Legal History of Austria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Commission for the Legal History of Austria (KRGÖ) is an institution of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW).

General

The KRGÖ was created in 1995 by amalgamating two commissions of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, both of which date back to 1864 and thus were among the oldest commissions of the OeAW: The Commission for the Savigny Foundation, which was initially responsible for the administration of the aforementioned foundation 1946, was appointed to the edition of Austrian legal sources, as well as the Weistümer- und Urbarkommission, whose task was the edition of relevant legal sources.

The source edition (in the “Fontes iuris” series) continues to be one of the main tasks of the commission, in addition to which it organized a conference approximately every year. Since 2004, the work of the Reichshof Council has been a special research focus of the KRGÖ. Since 2011 it has published its own journal, “ Contributions to the Legal History of Austria ”, which appears twice a year both online and in a print edition by the publishing house of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

The commission currently consists of fourteen voluntary members who are based at the universities of Vienna, Graz, Linz, Innsbruck and Salzburg. Werner Ogris , who had headed the Savigny Commission since 1975, was chairman until 2010 ; In 2010 Thomas Olechowski was elected as his successor. In 2012 the commission was dissolved, but re-established in 2014 and again elected Olechowski as chairman.

From 2003 to 2012 the commission had scientific staff, most recently two full-time equivalents and a half-day secretary, as well as their own premises in the 3rd district of Vienna. These personnel and material resources were transferred to the University of Vienna in 2012, where a “Research Center for Legal Sources” was set up. The commission, which was re-established in 2015, works closely with this research center, but only has third-party funded project staff.
