Local elections in Hesse in 1952

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The local elections in Hesse in 1952 took place on May 4, 1952 and were the third democratic elections after the end of the Nazi dictatorship .

Starting position

The CDU Hessen was under its chairman Werner Hilpert a left regional association of the CDU. The expression of this policy was the participation of the CDU in a grand coalition in Hesse under Christian Stock . In the state elections in Hesse in 1950 , this policy was vehemently rejected by the electorate: the CDU received only 18.8% of the vote, the SPD could govern alone. Accordingly , only Social Democrats belonged to the Zinn I cabinet . The FDP Hessen , together with the BHE, had become the strongest opposition party with 31.8%.

The KPD Hesse was at the local level only in their political strongholds appreciable size. In contrast, the Free Voting Communities have been the third strongest local political force since the local elections in Hesse in 1948 .

Election campaign

The central election campaign topic of the CDU was the law on Sundays and public holidays of the Hessian state government. It was criticized that the law would “restrict the rights of the churches to protection on Sundays and public holidays and entrust political authorities with setting the times of worship”. In addition, on the occasion of the judgments of the State Court of Justice, the CDU addressed the implementation of socializations and, instead of financing the losses of the nationalized companies, demanded that these 200 million DM be invested in social housing.

Legal bases

The legal basis was the Hessian municipality and district election law of February 25, 1952.

Municipal elections

In the municipal council elections, the independent groups of voters became the strongest party for the first time with 35.8%. The CDU was able to overtake the FDP again, but remained at an extremely low level.

Political party Result in%
Groups of voters 35.8%
SPD 31.6%
CDU 12.9%
BHE 5.5%
FDP 8.4%

District elections

A similar picture emerged at the level of the rural districts and urban districts, although the voter groups were less important here.

The voter turnout in the districts and urban districts was 76.8% at a high level. 2,225,705 valid votes of the total of 3,038,779 eligible voters were counted.

Political party percent
SPD 38.5%
CDU 17.8%
FDP 14.9%
Other 28.8% (of which 11.5% groups of voters)

The following results were obtained in the individual districts:
