The local elections in Saxony-Anhalt 2019 took place on May 26, 2019 . The city ​​councils of the three independent cities of Magdeburg , Halle and Dessau-Roßlau , the district assemblies of the eleven districts and the municipal and local councils were newly elected. The European Parliament election was held on the same day . At the same time, local elections were held in Baden-Württemberg , Brandenburg , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Rhineland-Palatinate , Saarland , Saxony and Thuringia, as well as citizenship elections in Bremen . All citizens aged 16 and over were entitled to vote.

Results

The turnout has increased significantly compared to the 2014 local elections , from 43.0 to 53.6 percent.

The strongest party, the CDU, suffered severe losses compared to 2014 (−9.7 percentage points) and now stands at 24.6%. The left is, after also heavy losses, only the third strongest force, with 15% (−6.5). The second strongest party in the district assemblies of Saxony-Anhalt is now the AfD with 16.4% (+14.1). With the SPD, the negative trend of the past few years continued, with 13.7% (−4.6) it only landed in fourth place nationwide. The Greens were able to make significant gains, with 8.4% (+2.9) they achieved their historically best result in local elections in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The FDP, with 5.9%, and the various local voter groups, with a total of 11.3%, performed better than in 2014.

In the municipal council elections, despite significant losses, the CDU was the strongest party with 23.8% of the votes , the Left with 17.5% as the second strongest party and the SPD with 11.7% as the third strongest party. The AfD follows just behind, also with 11.7%. The Greens achieved 6.4%, the FDP 4.5%. Local electoral groups play a major role in local councils, with 23.7% nationwide.

The picture for the seats won in the municipal councils is clearly different: Here the groups of voters with 1,491 seats are well ahead of the CDU (995 seats). Far behind are the SPD (439 seats) and the Left (419 seats), both well ahead of the AfD (325 seats), which in some cases could not occupy the seats won, the FDP (159 seats) and the Greens (125 seats) . 79 seats went to smaller parties, 133 seats to individual applicants.
