Compacting

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Compacting is a term used to describe the compression of materials that are mostly in parts.

Fiber composite component production

In the production of fiber composite components, individual fiber layers are compacted using negative pressure. For this purpose, these layers are covered with an airtight film and then this structure is evacuated . This compression of the fiber layers serves to give the semi-finished component its final dimension. The atmospheric pressure of 1013 mbar is used exclusively as the pressing pressure . The advantage over a standard press machine is that you do not need a stamp , which saves manufacturing costs for diversified components. The disadvantage is that only a maximum pressing pressure of p max 1013 mbar is possible. The compaction generally takes place directly before the resin injection , but can also be used as an intermediate work step in order to facilitate further draping , particularly in the case of components with several layers and a complicated and non-uniform tool geometry .

Further use

In the manufacture of powders , e.g. B. for a sintering process or for dry fuels , compacting refers to the compression of the powder, usually carried out by heavy industrial presses . Powder can be compressed so tightly that it retains its final shape and can be handled carefully like a very brittle material.

In foundry technology , pressing the sand molds is also referred to as compacting, in particular because this compacting can not only be done by pressing machines , but also by vibration. It is not uncommon for the sand to be additionally provided with a binder.

In waste management , compacting refers to the joining of several loose pieces of waste to a specific shape by pressing. This is used for normal household waste (or bulky waste) in order to better utilize transport capacities. In the case of radioactive waste , it is also used to reduce the volume, on the one hand because this waste has to be sealed in special sealing vessels, the size of which correlates positively with the costs, and on the other hand because the limited final storage volumes can be used more effectively.

In the production of sand sculptures , the term compacting is used for the pressing of sand with water into wooden molds. The aim of this process is to achieve a solid cohesion and a higher density of the sand.
