Konrad Knebel (born February 24, 1932 in Leipzig ) is a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

After the major air raids on Leipzig in December 1943, Konrad Knebel's family moved to Marienberg in the Ore Mountains. His parents were musicians . Knebel attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig . After passing high school in 1951 and completing his studies from 1951 to 1957 with Kurt Robbel , Arno Mohr , Bert Heller and Toni Mau at the University of Fine and Applied Arts Berlin-Weißensee , he has been working as a freelance painter and graphic artist in Berlin since 1957 . In addition, he worked as a freelance lecturer at the University of Fine and Applied Arts Berlin-Weißensee in 1965/66 and headed a painting group at VEB Tiefbau Berlin. Since 1965 Knebel began to paint on paper with egg tempera. In addition to the oil painting, a new group of works was created, the tempera leaves. Study trips and exhibitions took him to Poland, Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, Burma, France, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Italy, Norway, Vietnam and the USA. From 1989 to 1990 he was a member of the round table in the building ministry. He is a member of the Künstleronderbund in Germany .

In his pictures he repeatedly deals with the city theme as a symbol of being and human perishing: borders, decay, vacancy, traffic and demolition. In 1982 his work was featured in the DEFA documentary City Landscapes . In 2012 it was reported that Knebel had to leave his studio in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg , where he had worked for 38 years, because the gentrification that was taking place there was due to be converted into an open-plan office.
